Good to know

  • SRT or WebVTT?

SRT is the older, simpler format that most video editors and social platforms accept. WebVTT is the web standard used by the HTML video element, and adds cue positioning and styling.

  • What changes on the way

Timestamps switch between a comma (SRT) and a full stop (WebVTT) before the milliseconds. VTT voice and class tags become plain text in SRT; SRT font tags and {\an8}-style position codes are dropped in WebVTT.

  • Plain-text transcripts

The text option removes the numbering, timing and markup, and starts a new paragraph wherever there is a pause of a second and a half or more.

  • Nothing leaves your device

The file is read and converted in your browser. It is not uploaded to our servers or stored anywhere.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both list captions with start and end times. SRT numbers each caption and uses a comma before the milliseconds; WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header, uses a full stop, and can carry positioning, styling and speaker tags.

Will converting change my timing?

No. Every caption keeps its start and end time to the millisecond; only the way the time is written changes.

Are italics and other formatting kept?

Italic, bold and underline tags are kept in both formats. Font colours, position codes and WebVTT voice or class tags are removed when the target format cannot express them.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 5 MB. Subtitle files are plain text, so even a feature-length film is usually far smaller than that.

Can I create subtitles from a video here?

This tool converts subtitle files you already have. To generate captions from the speech in a video, use the free video caption generator, which also exports SRT and VTT.
