Script to audio length calculator

Paste your script to see how long the finished voice-over will run, with its word and character count. Pick a slow, normal or fast speaking speed, or type your own words per minute.

The calculator also checks the characters against each ToneCraft plan's monthly allowance, so you know which plan covers the script before you generate anything. Nothing you paste is uploaded.

Characters are counted with runs of spaces and line breaks as one, so the editor's exact count can differ slightly. Free-plan audio ends with a short spoken outro.

The free plan includes 25,000 characters a month, no card needed. Copy your script, then paste it into the editor after you sign in.

How to estimate a voice-over's length

  1. 1

Paste the script exactly as it will be read, including any headings you want spoken.

  2. 2

Choose a slow, normal or fast speaking speed, or enter a custom words-per-minute figure.

  3. 3

Read the estimated audio length and the word and character counts.

  4. 4

Check which plan covers the script, on standard or premium voices.

Good to know

  • Speed sets the length

The same 500 words run about 3 min 51 s at a slow 130 words per minute, 3 min 20 s at a normal 150 and 2 min 56 s at a fast 170. The presets are rules of thumb, so set the pace you actually use.

  • Characters decide the plan

ToneCraft measures scripts in characters, spaces and punctuation included, so the plan check uses the character count rather than the word count. Plans are sized at about 55,000 characters per hour of audio.

  • Premium voices use more

Premium voices are available on paid plans and use 4× credits, so the same script takes 4 times the allowance. Standard voices work on every plan at 1×.

  • Very long scripts

One script in the editor can be up to 100,000 characters. For a longer text, split it into parts, or import it as a book: audiobooks take up to 1,000,000 characters.
